Former Longhorn Sam Acho, fresh off a dazzling performance at the NFL combine that certainly elevated his stock for the April draft, will make an appearance Friday in Austin to help raise donations for the Christian missionary program founded and operated by his family that provides free medical and dental aid in Nigeria.

Acho will sign autographs at Russell Korman jewelers, 3806 N. Lamar, on Friday from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Acho’s family established a missionary compound in Nigeria and each year organizes a trip through its Living Hope Ministries to provide medical care to natives. Acho and his brother, current UT linebacker Emmanuel Acho make the trip, and often take one or two Longhorns players with them.

Here is a story about the Living Hope Ministries that appeared in the American-Statesman in 2009.

Friday’s appearance by Acho will mark his first return to Austin since the combine. He has been training in Florida since early January, and it paid off Monday when he recorded the combine’s fastest time ever by a defensive lineman in the three-cone drill (6.69 seconds) and also logged a personal best time of 4.63 seconds in the 40-yard dash.

Acho said Thursday that as a result of his performance at the combine, he no longer plans to run at Texas’ annual pro day on March 29 and instead will do just the position drills for defensive end and linebacker.

OPERATION HOPE FUNDRAISER

June 4, 2010
Longhorn’s Defensive Coordinator and Future Head Football Coach Will Muschamp will be the keynote speaker at the 2010 Living Hope Ministries Charity luncheon.
About 250 people are expected to attend the second annual charitable event on Friday June 4, 2010 at the Radisson Hotel, the Radisson Hotel is located at 6060 North Central Expressway in Dallas, Texas.
Silent auction opens at 11:30 a.m., and the luncheon begins12 noon. The event benefits “OPERATION HOPE,” Living Hope Ministries’ medical mission in rural Nigeria.
The luncheon hosts are the dynamic duo, Longhorn defensive stars Sam and Emmanuel Acho. The Acho brothers use their national platform to bring awareness to the plight of thousands of people in rural villages across Nigeria who are dying from a lack of basic medical care.
“The purpose of this event is to raise enough money to build a hospital
in Isuikwuato, in Abia State, Nigeria,” Sam Acho said. “There are over 500,00 people there, and most of those people have never seen a doctor.”
Muschamp said he was happy to support Sam and Emmanuel and the great work of Living Hope Ministries. “The people are in desperate need, and when Sam and Emmanuel Acho ask me to help them I’m going to do whatever I can do
to help them because I believe in those two young men and their family’s vision.”
Dr. Sonny Acho, founder of Living Hope Ministries, said the support of the Longhorn family has been a great blessing to Operation Hope. “We are so grateful for the support we have received from our Longhorn family,” he said. “This year we are praying that more people will catch the vision of what we are trying to do and partner with us to help make the goal of building this hospital a reality.”
Longhorn linebacker Emmanuel Acho said that his charity has lined up “some great items for our silent auction that Longhorn fans will love.”
“The money we raise will have a huge impact on people in Africa that desperately need help,” he said.
